Gavi is located at an elevation of 3,400 ft above sea level. This is an area where the temperature can reach 10 degrees Celsius in the evening, even in hot summers. Another specialty of Gavi is the barren hills rich in grasslands.
You can go to Gavi from Vandiperiyar and Kumily. Passengers, vehicles, and cameras can take the pass from the check post at Vallakadavu and start their journey.
A good trekking experience enjoying the comforts of the forest, greenery, and snow. With luck, the animals can be found in their habitat. Do not park or leave the vehicle in the woods. Touch and protect the forest. Places like Vagamon, Kuttikkanam, and Thekkady are also worth a visit.

Airport: Kochi (200 km), Thiruvananthapuram (250 km). Railway Station: Theni (70 km), Kottayam (120 km).
By Road: Kottayam-Vandiperiyar (95 km). On the way from Vandiperiyar to Kumily, turn right through Kannimara Estate to reach Gavi (27 km). The first nine kilometers are the Vallakkadavu check post. You have to take a pass from there to continue the journey. Access to Gavi is strictly restricted as it is part of the Periyar Tiger Reserve. From Pathanamthitta to Kumily via Gavi. There is an RTC bus service. These services are available at 6.30 am and 12.30 pm.
Those coming from Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts can reach Pathanamthitta via Punalur or Adoor. Travelers from other northern districts like Alappuzha and Ernakulam can reach Pathanamthitta via Thiruvalla and Kozhencherry by KSRTC buses at 6.30 am and 12.30 pm to reach Gavi. The journey from Pathanamthitta to Gavi by the KSRTC bus is a very interesting experience. Gavi can be reached in four and a half hours by trekking through hills, valleys, waterfalls, meadows, dams, and forests.
The Kerala Forest Development Corporation has implemented an ecotourism project which allows entry to 100 people a day. An average of 700 people arrives at the check post for the Gavi Yatra. Access to Gavi will not be allowed without the prior permission of the Forest Department. This facility is available to those who book in advance in the tourism program of the Forest Department or the Kerala Forest Development Corporation. Private vehicles will not be allowed. Another easy way to reach Gavi is by regular KSRTC buses plying from Pathanamthitta and Kumily via Gavi. There are two daily services passing through Gavi.
If you want to experience the beauty of the forest, you have to start the journey from Pathanamthitta itself. Departing from Pathanamthitta, Chittar, Sitathod, and Angamoozhi, you will enter the forest. From there, it will pass through parts of the Kakkad Hydroelectric Project and reach Gavi via Kaki Dam, Ananthodu Dam, and Pampa Dam. The journey by KSRTC bus over the dams is fascinating.
